Name/Work Name: Sha Gojyo / Jien

Canon: Saiyuki

Canon Point: Post Chapter 50, right before Saiyuki Reload

AU/CRAU: N

Age: 23

History: http://saiyuki.wikia.com/wiki/Sha_Gojyo

Personality: When you first encounter Gojyo, he appears to be a chain smoking womanizer with a foul mouth. While that may be on the surface, Gojyo’s personality runs much deeper than that.

One of Gojyo’s prominent traits throughout the series is his caring nature and “big brother” attitude.Gojyo’s rough history with his mother has a lot to do with this “big brother” nature. Gojyo cannot stand to see younger kids in pain or in similar situations that he went through. When Sanzo and Gojyo faced Kinkaku, a child youkai that Gojyo had saved from two thugs in a nearby village, Sanzo attempted to shoot at him when they were fighting. Gojyo had seen a lot of his younger self inside of Kinkaku, and distracted the shot to protect Kinkaku and yelled at Sanzo “How can you shoot a brat?” Sanzo proceeds to punch him across the face and Gojyo accepts it in order to defend Kinkaku. This displays how protective Gojyo can be around children in order to keep them out of harm’s way.

Being a half-demon is generally considered taboo in the Saiyuki canon. Half-demons are unfortunately noticeable due to their physical appearance, which includes having rare red hair and crimson eyes. Whenever his half-breed origins comes up or these special physical traits, Gojyo tends to get reserved and tries to wave it off because he does not like being reminded of his past. Using women, booze and gambling serves him as a distraction to keep those past scars at bay.

Gojyo tends to crack jokes and make sly (and lewd) remarks to cover up his emotions as well, and tends to not let other people’s opinions get to him. Gojyo does not like his mask slipping out of place because he does not like to appear vulnerable to others, especially in front of Hakkai, Sanzo and Goku. That being said, Gojyo rarely is serious. Whenever in battle, Gojyo tends to make remarks about the enemy, usually joking and teasing to try to aggravate them. However, there are moments when he has to get genuinely serious and think, typically strategizing with the others and complying to whatever Sanzo or Hakkai say. There isn't a moment where he tries to turn his back on his comrades. Despite the fact he tends to joke during battle, Gojyo knows that fighting youkai and the situation at hand is a serious issue that should not be taken lightly.

He also is compassionate towards other people that they meet on their adventures. When Gojyo was still living the street life as a gambler, he was coming back to his apartment and found Hakkai, then known as Cho Gonou, lying in the street covered in blood. Gojyo took him for dead, but looked over the man lying in the road in the pouring rain. Gojyo discovered that Gonou was still alive and took him into his apartment and gave him medical attention that was needed. Not long after the attack, Sanzo and Goku came to his apartment, asking for a wanted criminal named Gonou. Gojyo honestly did not know Gonou's name, but figured that the man they were looking for was in fact the man he saved off the streets. When Gonou took off, not wanting Gojyo to get involved, Gojyo took off anyways to go protect him even though he barely even knew Gonou. This shows just how loyal and dependable Gojyo can be. Later on Gonou, now Hakkai, eventually found Gojyo again and the two decided to live together. Hakkai made a huge impact on his life by showing him what true loyalty and friendship was when Gojyo never had those examples ever before in his life. Gojyo was used to people coming in and out of his life, but Hakkai showed him something different.

He is known as the “bad boy” of the Sanzo-ikkou. Unlike the rest of the gang, Gojyo curses the most frequently, smokes the most (but its close with Sanzo) and often tries to seduce women. Years before he had joined the Sanzo-ikkou, he had lived on the streets and drifted when his friend, Banri, and had learned how to gamble and steal in order to make a living. Because of this past of living on the streets, he is the only member of the group that has street smarts which tend to get him into trouble.

Gojyo’s most prominent trait is his perversion. The redhead tends to occupy his time with women and flirting with them. He openly admits to others about enjoying sex and will constantly make lewd jokes or comments whenever possible. At the beginning of the series, the gang is at an inn where a group of dancers show up. Gojyo immediately gets excited at the prospect and says that he should “invite them to dance in his bed”. One of the girls later on approaches Gojyo and attempts to sleep with him (in order to assassinate him), but he immediately attacks back. She says that the data about him claimed that his weakness was women, which he doesn’t deny. He remarks about his good looks and strong physique, and has been shown working out with hand weights between battles, claiming that "ladies will cry if I don't keep my temple sculpted”. Though he boasts frequently of his conquests and his sex appeal, in reality his seductions seldom seem to work out.

While Gojyo outwardly appears to be a confident, bordering egotistical, character, he has his insecurities. Sometimes he feels as if he isn’t as “good” as the others, mostly referring to combat since he doesn’t have any sort of supernatural power. This could translate into him not feeling useful or strong where it counts.

His relationship with everyone in the Sanzo-ikkou varies. Gojyo and Goku bicker constantly and Gojyo is not afraid to tease him whenever possible, but ultimately their relationship can be seen as brotherly in nature. For example, when interacting with Goku, who in appearance and attitude is the youngest character in the Sanzo group, they constantly bicker and argue like siblings. Gojyo tends to call him “stupid monkey” throughout the series and Goku in turns call Gojyo a “perverted kappa”. Despite the fact that they bicker, Gojyo genuinely cares about Goku and goes out of his way in order to protect him during their adventures. When Goku was fighting against Rikudo, Goku turned into his youkai form. When that happened, Hakkai told Gojyo to take care of Goku. Gojyo immediately confronted him, allowed him to bite onto his arm and managed to help him return back to his suppressed state. When he returned to normal, Gojyo held onto a sleeping Goku and took care of him. While it may not be implicitly stated in canon, I infer that Gojyo cares for Goku by some of their interactions together such as when Gojyo teaches Goku how to play cards and watches out for him when they fight together. After Goku’s power limiter broke, Gojyo appeared to be worried about Goku’s state and looked over him to make sure he was okay.

Gojyo’s relationship with Hakkai is probably the closest in the group and they appear to be best friends. Gojyo helped nurse Hakkai back to health when he first met him, and they had been close ever since then. Gojyo and Hakkai both lived together back after when they first met Sanzo and Goku. While Gojyo tends to crack jokes constantly, he’ll immediately stop if Hakkai is severely hurt or angry. At the same time, when Gojyo does something that upsets Hakkai, he can expect no mercy. Gojyo is very loyal to Hakkai, and the greatest example being when they first meet Sanzo, and Gojyo goes up against Sanzo to defend a guy whose name he doesn't even know. As the series progresses, Gojyo and Hakkai grow closer as friends. Conversation between them is easy and they know each other so well that they often don't have to finish a sentence to understand each other.

Gojyo and Sanzo can't very well stand each other and usually Gojyo refers to him as a "damn arrogant monk" or “shit monk”. Gojyo met Sanzo at his doorstep asking him about the demon killer Gonou to which Gojyo replies he never heard of him. This results in a fight between them. Even throughout the years, Gojyo and Sanzo still haven't made peace with each other. When the group was attacked by Kinkaku and Ginkaku, Gojyo and Sanzo were forced to work together to save Hakkai and Goku. They bickered and argued about how much they hated each other when they are ambushed by the human thugs that Gojyo beat up to save Kinkaku and later on, youkai. However, there is one thing that Gojyo and Sanzo do that throws wrench in their already rocky relationship: They share lighters. Not always, but when one needs a light, they will bum it off the other. They'll even light their cigarettes off each other’s sometime. This being said, they never share cigarettes since they use different brands and Sanzo finds Gojyo's distasteful.

Debt: Years ago when Gojyo was a child, he was abused by his step-mother who only saw Gojyo as a reminder of her husband's infidelity. Jien, Gojyo's half brother, would try his best to keep his mother calm, usually by sleeping with her. However, one day his step-mother tried to kill Gojyo, but Jien stepped in and killed her to protect Gojyo and saved his life. Jien, unable to cope with the pain of killing his own mother, ran away and Gojyo could never repay him for saving his life. It is the one debt in his life that he would willingly agree to pay and work for the Witch. It wouldn't take much convincing for him if he could pay Jien back for all that he did for him years ago.

Suitability: Gojyo doesn’t like being bound by any rules, and would not enjoy being thrown into a life of servitude. Any chance he could, he would complain about the jobs and tasks he’d be required to do and try to figure out some way to get out of it if possible or slack off. However, if his debt is incredibly meaningful to him, and if it’s something he wants to achieve, he’ll do what he can to pay off that debt, but probably will still protest and won’t put in the full effort to at least keep up a front.

Previous Game Info: N/A

Inventory: Clothing (poofy khaki pants, white tank top, blue vest jacket, bandana and boots), a pack of cigarettes, matches, and his weapon (Shakujo)

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Gojyo lacks any sort of supernatural powers, despite having some youkai blood. However, his primary weapon of choice is Shakujo, a metal staff-like weapon with a sickle and chain. Despite not having any sort of powers, Gojyo’s strengths come from his street smarts. He grew up as a thug in a rough environment where he had to learn how to fend for himself and knows his way through the degenerate side of society. Gambling and philandering are skills that define him, but are also a significant weakness. His life as a delinquent causes him to get into trouble frequently with anyone he runs into, including the Sanzo-ikkou. Vices including women, cigarettes and alcohol are also a weakness that usually tends to distract him. Another significant weakness is his compassion for others, especially young children.
